Energy Star
Verification – Home Energy Ratings Systems (HERS)
HERS ratings are conducted by third-party HERS technicians. HERS ratings involve the analysis of a home's construction plans and at least one on-site inspection of the home. The plan review allows the home energy rater to attain technical information such as orientation, shading area, proposed SEER rating, insulation levels, etc. Meanwhile, the on-site inspection includes a blower door test (to test the tightness of the house) and a duct test (to test the tightness of the ducts). Results of these tests, along with inputs derived from the plan review, are entered into a computer simulation program to generate the HERS score and the home's estimated annual energy costs.
The first step in the rating process is to have the home's construction plan reviewed by a home energy rater. The rater will collect several types of information required to conduct a technical review of the house plan.
Klabe Homes will submit this information along with your house plan. The home energy rater will then use this information, along with an energy-efficiency software package, as the basis for performing an energy analysis of the home design. This analysis will yield a projected, pre-construction HERS score. The home energy rater will review the HERS rating results with Klabe Homes to ensure that the inputs and analysis are correct. Upon completion of the plan review, the home energy rater will work with Klabe Homes to guarantee that necessary steps are taken to ensure that the house in question will pass the on-site inspection.
The final on-site inspection consists of conducting blower door and duct leakage tests that, in conjunction with the specifications agreed to during the plan review, allow home energy raters to determine the exact score of the proposed ENERGY STAR labeled home. |
